Chard and Potatoes Salad
Chard and potato salad, or "Blitva s krumpirom," is a beloved Croatian dish that embodies the essence of Mediterranean simplicity and wholesome goodness. This traditional salad is a staple in many Croatian households, particularly along the Dalmatian coast, where the cuisine is heavily influenced by fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
The salad is a perfect balance of hearty potatoes and nutritious chard, also known as Swiss chard. The simplicity of the ingredients allows each element to shine, making the dish both satisfying and light.
What makes this salad particularly special is the dressing - an uncomplicated blend of olive oil, garlic and a splash of vinegar or lemon juice. The olive oil, locally produced, adds a rich, fruity note, while the garlic provides a pungent, aromatic kick. The acidity from the vinegar or lemon juice cuts through the richness, bringing all the flavours together.
Chard and potato salad is often served as a side dish, accompanying grilled fish or meats, but it can also stand alone as a light meal. It’s a dish that showcases the best of Croatian cuisine: fresh, high-quality ingredients prepared in a way that enhances their natural flavors.
This salad is more than just a dish - it’s a reflection of Croatian culinary traditions and the country’s deep connection to the land and sea. It’s a reminder of the simplicity and beauty of Mediterranean cooking, where a few well-chosen ingredients can create a meal that’s both delicious and nourishing. So, next time you’re looking for a taste of Croatia, try making chard and potato salad - it’s a little piece of Dalmatia on your plate.
